An exhibition of images.

Hello everyone, I'm really excited to announce that I'll be showing a selection of images from my Kansas fair project, at the Strecker-Nelson Gallery in Manhattan, KS.  The show is from June 11- July 11.  The prints will be for sale and will be framed in frames that were custom made for this show.  I hope some of you can make it over to the gallery to take a look.  The Strecker-Nelson is a fantastic gallery that represents artists from all over the state of Kansas.  If you have any questions about the show or purchasing prints, please feel free to contact me at brian@briangoodmanphoto.com

Lane County Fair - Dighton, KS

After photographing in Great Bend, I traveled to Dighton, KS for the Lane County Fair.

Dighton, KS is truly out in the middle of nowhere.  It's way out there and it's incredibly beautiful country.  The drive from Great Bend to Dighton is one of the more remote stretches of road I've been on and I thought it was fantastic.  It's just so wide open out there.

I arrived in Dighton before all of the festivities began, so I had some time to explore the town(pop. 1,010).  The first thing you notice in town is the huge grain elevator.  I got out on the train tracks and made an image of it set against the blue sky and perfect white clouds.  Looking back at that image, I remember how quiet it was and how the clouds seemed to just be hanging in the sky.  Another thing I remember about making that image.. as I was fiddling with my tripod and camera, I startled a giant jackrabbit that was hiding in the tall grass right next to me.  Scared the bejeezus out of me.

The Lane Co. Fair kicks off with a parade.  It's a small parade, but it covers all of the requirements of a small town parade.  It had antique cars, Shriners, horses, candy throwing, and a marching band.

After the parade, I made my way out to the fairgrounds.  One thing I'm always struck by at the fairs out in western Kansas is that the carnival rides are usually just out in a field.  There aren't many trees in that part of the country and I think it's a little surreal to see a carnival sitting out in a field, flat land as far as you can see to the horizon.

I stayed and photographed until the color left the sky.  I think I managed to make some nice images from this fair.

Barton County Fair - Great Bend, KS

The drive from Lawrence, Ks to Great Bend was one of my favorites on this Kansas fair journey.  You get to pass through the Flint Hills, a really big wind farm(windmills), and numerous little towns that just beg to be explored.  On the way, you pass old vacant farm houses and a couple of what looked to me like ghost towns.  I stopped and made a few photographs at one empty house that appeared to have been untouched for decades.  The front door was long gone and tumbleweeds littered the living room.

After checking into the Baltzell Motel (I made a point to find the cheapest, kitschiest roadside motels I could find), I headed out to the fairgrounds.  The Barton Co. fair had a 4-H fair and a carnival.  It was a really sweet day, loads of sun and happy people.  I got some really great shots of the rides at dusk.  Here are a few images from the day...
